What was your motivation to start learning Spanish?

I had never studied a language long term before I studied Spanish; I felt it was a challenge that I wanted to achieve. Growing up, my family and I always had a strong interest in Latin American food and culture, and two of my sisters also speak Spanish so this is what got me started.

When did you begin?

I began studying at El Patio in 2011 and was studying on and off until I became more serious about it at the start of 2014.

How did you start - group classes, online, CD, book, podcasts, in the street ...?

My first Spanish learning experience was starting right at the beginning in Elementary 1 with El Patio in 2011.

Have you travelled or lived in a Spanish speaking country?

Traveling is a passion of mine, like for most people I’m sure! I have travelled to Spain and Mexico, with another trip planned to Mexico next year.

Do you have a current goal, and if so, what is it?

My goal is to be able to fluently converse with a Spanish speaker, and start to think in Spanish rather than always translating in my mind. My partner is from Mexico and she does a good job of giving me the motivation to keep going.

Do you have a particular study schedule apart from your group class?

I try to practice at least one method of learning each day, even if only for 15 minutes. Using apps, speaking, reading or watching a movie. Every little bit helps to keep it fresh.

What do you think is the most challenging thing about learning Spanish?

The most challenging thing for me is memorising new material, especially all the different verb tenses.

What do you think your strengths and weaknesses are for learning Spanish?

One of my strengths is writing, I feel I can write better than I can speak Spanish. One of my weaknesses is the difficulty I have memorising new material, and another is confidence, I feel that confidence really helps when learning and speaking Spanish – Wine also helps! (If you’re over 18).

What is your most effective method for memorisation?

Memorisation is really challenging, I find repetition is the best for me. It really lets everything sink in and feel natural.

What are or have been your most helpful resources? (eg, podcasts, songs, books, websites ...)

Traveling has been the best facilitator to improve my Spanish, immersing yourself really puts everything into perspective and naturally you get to practice using the words you need on a daily basis. Other than this, I have found the I Learn Spanish audio CDs by Michel Thomas to be very useful.

What is your advice for anybody starting out learning Spanish?

I would recommend getting started in a group class at El Patio, download an App like Duolingo and start watching some Spanish movies, or English movies with Spanish subtitles are also great.

¿Cuándo empezaste a estudiar español?

He viajado a España y México, y próximamente voy de nuevo a México.
