Halloween wouldn't be complete without some great horror movies to keep everyone on the edge of their seats. And, the Spanish-speaking world has some great horror cinema readily available. From Spain across to Mexico and down to Venezuela, Spanish-language horror is just as engrossing as its English counterpart - plus, you get to see how much you can follow with your Spanish! Here are some of our recommendations for this year's Halloween season.

1. El espinazo del diablo (The Devil's Backbone)



After Carlos - a 12-year-old whose father has died in the Spanish Civil War - arrives at an ominous boys' orphanage, he discovers the school is haunted and has many dark secrets which he must uncover. As the innocent newcomer navigates a cruel reality while coping with bullies, disquieting rumours of otherworldly visitations chill the bone to the marrow.

2. Archivo 253 (Archive 253)



A group of amateur paranormal investigators enter an abandoned insane asylum to discover if the stories they have heard are actually true.

3. La casa del fin de los tiempos (The house at the end of time)



Dulce encounters apparitions in her house and unleashes a terrible prophecy. Thirty years later, Dulce, now an old woman, returns to unravel the mystery that has terrorized her for years.

4. El hoyo (The platform)



Inside a vertical prison system, inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, The Platform is a twisted social allegory about mankind at its darkest and hungriest.

 

5. Tesis (Thesis)



A cult classic and director Alejandro Amenábar's debut film. While doing a thesis about violence, Ángela finds a snuff video where a girl is tortured until death. Soon she discovers that the girl was a former student in her faculty...
